One of my xmas presents this year were tickets to the National Geographic Live series here in Seattle. Last night a group of us went to see Ed Viesturs speak at Benoroya Hall. If you’re not familiar with him, he’s the first American to summit all 14 8000 meter mountains in the world (all in the Himalayas) and he’s also a Seattle native.

His presentation was very interesting and funny as he had photos from all the peaks he summitted during this 16 year project and a great sense of humor to go along with them. There were also points of sadness as he talked about losing friends in the mountains and the tragedy that occured on Everest that brought about the book “Into Thin Air”. Most of all it was inspiring to see somebody spend that much time completing and energy completing such a project safely. It truly shows you that mountaineering can be as safe as you want it to be as long as you have the ability to walk away when the danger gets too high.
